Forums - PC Discussion - Testing the PC gaming waters. What games can/should I try out with my PC?

Tagged games:

So, I'm making some small upgrades to my Gateway PC (Specs below) and I wanted to get a few games that would give me a good idea of what all the fuss is about with PC gaming. I'm an avid console gamer and I've never saw much value in PC gaming, so I hoping to broaden my horizons for lack of a better phrase.

I really like RPGs and The Witcher 2 looks decent. I might even try Skyrim, but I'm not a big Bethesda fan. I'm really looking for games that aren't available on consoles. Any suggestions would be great.

Processor Speed 3.0GHz (3.3GHz with Turbo Boost) How fast a computer processor carries out instructions. In general, faster is better, but processor speeds across brands may not be equivalent (i.e., a 3.0GHz AMD processor may not be the same speed as a 3.0GHz Intel processor).
Cache Memory 6MB A small segment of memory that stores frequently used information for fast access by the processor, improving response time.

System Memory (RAM) Expandable To 16GB Maximum amount of memory a computer can support (as opposed to the amount that comes preinstalled).
Type of Memory (RAM) DDR3
Hard Drive Type SATA (7200 rpm) Hard drives are classified based on the interface they use to connect to a computer. Common interfaces for internal hard drives include EIDE, PATA (also known as, ATA and IDE), SATA and SCSI. Common interfaces for external hard drives include USB 2.0, FireWire and eSATA.

System Version 64-bit The terms "32-bit" and "64-bit" refer to the way a computer's processor (CPU) handles information. A 64-bit operating system handles large amounts of system memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system.

Most software programs designed for a 32-bit operating system will work on the 64-bit version, with the exception of many antivirus programs. However, if a program is designed for a 64-bit operating system, it is not backwards-compatible with a 32-bit version.

Device drivers designed for a 32-bit system will not work on computers running a 64-bit operating system. Similarly, drivers designed for a 64-bit system will not work with a 32-bit version.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

Around the Network

Neverwinter Nights, Neverwinter Nights 2 (Especially Mask of the Betrayer if Story is what you want), Starcraft 2 if you like strategy games.

They're like KoToR only a lot deeper (and use same engine :P), Dragon Age (except if I remember the dragon age controls are aweful on console).

Gothic II, Arx Fatalis (both of these games are pretty old though)

You'll be able to play anything. lol

Assuming you are okay with medium graphics on new new releases.

edit: I highly recommend Witcher 2, it is a very hard game for some people, combat can take you awhile to get use to.

Well here was the winners for the Top 10 games of the generation. DOTA 2 might also be a great game to pick up. If you need a beta key ill give you one.

Haha, these specs will be enough for high settings at least.

With:

8GB DDR2(!) RAM

Core 2 Duo E8500 @4GHz

Radeon HD 4850 1GB Ram

I am able to play Guild Wars 2 at high settings with the improved textures at 40-50 fps. His rig will be sufficent for high-very high settings^^

Guildwars 2 is not that visually impressive. Coming from someone who still plays it.

But it is a demanding game for your PC.

Guildwars 2 is only demanding on the CPU

Well, it's not only Guild Wars. I still can play like 90% of all games with high settings (thank you console ports^^), the literally only exceptions are (or should be as I haven't installed both of them) Battlefield 3 and the Witcher 2. With mid-range components from 2008-2009(!)
