Seizes 34% of mobile market in Q4

Although it’s no longer Wall Street’s darling, Apple is still outperforming the competition and in the fourth quarter of 2012 it managed to pass Samsung and become the top phonemaker in the US market.

Strategy Analytics reports that Apple sold 17.7 million iPhones in the US during the holiday quarter, a 38 percent jump year-on-year. Meanwhile Samsung sold 16.8 million units. Apple had a 34 percent market share, while Samsung is still in a close second with 32 percent.

LG ranked third, with a market share of 9 percent and 4.7 million units shipped. However, LG lost ground compared to 2011, when it managed to ship 6.9 million units and command a 14 percent share.

However, smartphones are maturing and growth is starting to slow down. Total phone shipments in the US grew just 4 percent to 52 million units.

I expect even more huge sales in 2013.

For this to make sense, they must be including all mobile phones. In other words, Apple sold more smartphones than Samsung sold smartphones + dumbphones.

Surprised. Based on other reports it seems Samsung had all the momentum while Apple was stagnanting.

Good for Apple.

Yeah... Apple is still big, but it simply cannot remain as dominant in the onslaught of Android devices the market is flooded with.

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

I'm glad i live in Europe where Apple isn't all that influential. Google all the way :D

I just read today by the way that out of all the smartphones sold in the Netherlands in 2012 (4,6 million) 15% were iPhones and 44,7% were from Samsung.

So sad

You do realize they just trade back and forth every year as their new devices launch.

When the next "galaxy" series launched Samsung is #1 until the next iPhone launches... rinse and repeat.

Apple will release the next iPhone in June/July just because that...

Nope. They do fall and Sammy does spring.

emerging markets is where the money is. The US and major western markets are beginning to stagnate.

A plastic iPhone at 299-399 for those markets next year seems plausible with the launch of iPhone 6.
