Forums - Sales Discussion - Complete Sales Comparisons, Part 2

Part 1

In a CrazzyMan post, he wanted us to only discussing PS3 to PS2 sales, and told us to go make another thread to discuss other sales comparisons, so I decided I'd go ahead and put together a small (ie: LARGE) comparison of the 3 current-gen systems available on the market today.

This is part 2 of that comparison, in which I will briefly discuss the last generation consoles, Sony's PlayStation 2, and Nintendo's GameCube, Microsoft's Xbox (in that order). Launch dates, total sales, first year sales, and second year sales will be given for each. At the bottom will be a direct comparisons, so you can skip right down there if you wish, followed by some conclusions. Links will be provided. Anything anyone would like to add would be appreciated!

Conclusions:
- Looking at first year sales, the Wii has similar numbers to the PS2, the PS3 has slightly higher numbers than the Xbox, and the 360 has similar numbers to the GameCube
- We are above last generations adoption numbers after one year, though if you include the Dreamcast, we are slightly behind
- Since this generation has only started, not much can be said about total sales

Part 3

Around the Network

It should be noted that PS2's first year in all regions didn't have the same supply issues that the Wii had, because it had a much more staggered launch

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I think he is going Jap first year + Euro first year + Amer first year

Why do you think I said that PS2 had a more staggered launch, and didn't have the same supply issues as PS2?

The only really interesting piece of data here is the % changes between the 1st and 2nd years of last gen. Once we get a second year of data this gen, we will get a better understanding of how things will play out. I guess we already have that data for 360 though. Care to post that?

I'm willing to go out on a limb and bet that the Wii will experience the lowest rate of growth (%) of all consoles this gen. Any takers?

Around the Network

The 360 increases are in the first part.

Edit: I'm not sure that the Wii will have the smallest % increase... but at the same time, depending on demand and supply, it might end up being like that. PS2 - Wii first year numbers are very similar, and it saw a pretty large increase, except for in Japan. Course, Japan 2nd year was everywhere else's 1st year, when their was supply issues and such.

Ah yes. Very impressive too. Saw a much bigger % increase than any console last gen. Interesting stuff.

As for my wii-wager, I don't expect the Wii to experience the same trajectory as the PS2. It will peak much earlier IMO. Should be close though.

nice info

My 100th Post!!!!

well...

Ps3 will just about beat GC's TOTAL sales in other within 1 year..

an impressive feat considering "people" here say it's doing worse than the GC

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

PS3 isn't doing that bad - it just looks bad compared to the mighty Wii
