Report – Nintendo has co-ownership in Fatal Frame IP

Changes to the copyright status of the Fatal Frame (or Project Zero, as its known in Japan) franchise suggest Nintendo now owns a significant share in the horror series.

Rely on Horror reports Nintendo now has full ownership of spin-off Spirit Camera as well as co-ownership of Fatal Frame alongside Tecmo Koei.

The platform holder now has the publishing rights to any game in the franchise, which makes it unlikely we’ll see a new Fatal Frame game outside of Nintendo consoles – or that we’ll see independent effort to bring across the patchily localised series.

Fatal Frame kicked off in 2001 on the PS2 and Xbox and spawned four core entires; the latest, Zero: Tsukihami no Kamen, releases exclusively on Wii and has not been localised. The second game is being re-released under the title Project Zero 2: Wii Edition and will arrive on June 29 longside 3DS spin-off Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir.

Thanks, absolutezero!

What I'm wondering is if this is just a step towards a possible future Nintendo takeover of Tecmo-Koei.  I've seen them get closer and close over the course of this generation and have commented on it a few times; they've worked with each other on Metroid: Other M, Nintendo is publishing NG3 for the WiiU, SW3 was a Wii timed exclusive and was localised and published by NoE in Europe, Tecmo-Koei also supported the 3DS straight away with games like DoA: Dimensions and a SW game, FF/PZ 4 was also Wii exclusive and was very almost published by NoE in Europe, now we have this.

Your thoughts?

Wait, what? Does this mean we won't see an enhanced version of the game released on PS3/360 (Or new consoles) with the added content of the Wii U version (Aside from any touch screen stuff ofcourse), but I've heard it has full weapon upgrades and the trademark gore (Cutting limbs off) which the original third game didn't have... if it DOES mean that... well that's just gay! D:

I'm pretty sure the added content and dismemberment is only for the WiiU, but I'm not entirely sure

Fatal Frame for Wii U. My tears are ready.

WiiU would be an ideal system for a new Fatal Frame. IF NoA ever brought it over....

Right, what i'm wondering is if this means Americans will ever see this game series ever again...

i wouldnt take their initial 3ds support as a sight of things to come. Yet this move shows that maybe Tecmo cant sustain itself for too long. So i wouldnt be surrised if it happen, if not by nintendo by other.

Sounds like Nintendo wants a Fatal Frame as a Wii U exclusive. Not a bad move, Nintendo.

I hope they don't take over Tecmo, only because Gust would be in that deal as well and I'd hate to see them forced to change up what's been working so well for them.

co-ownership in Fatal Frame will be meaningful if Nintendo actually starts caring enough about the franchise to bring it to the West. Otherwise it really doesn't matter how much they own of it.

So the atelier series switches to Nintendo exclusivity? I don't see the issue, there, unless NoA stonewalls them.

Perfect game for Wii U.

This was planned in advance, camera games will be very common.

Even Pokémon Snap, a game I don't really like, would fit well on the system.
