Crytek Says Comments about Next-Gen Consoles Blocking Used Games Weren't 'Serious'

You may recall that Crytek director of creative development Rasmus Hojengaard said last week that a next-generation console that was capable of blocking the use of used games would be "awesome." This week the studio is backing away from that statement after fans gave them a piece of their mind. Hojengaard said the following when asked about such a console last week during the conclusion of this C&VG interview:

"From a business perspective that would be absolutely awesome. It's weird that [second-hand] is still allowed because it doesn't work like that in any other software industries, so it would be great if they could somehow fix that issue as well."

This week he says that his comments weren't meant to be taken seriously. They sure sounded as if they were meant to be taken seriously. Nevertheless, Hojengaard says this week that he was just kidding:

"My comment made in the interview released on the 24th of April, touching upon 'blocking sales of used games', was not intended to be taken seriously nor representative of the opinion of Crytek," he now tells C&VG.

"It's unfortunate that you don't win any awards for most downloaded game," he told PC Gamer, referring to how badly Crysis 2 was pirated. "But yeah, obviously it's something we'd like to address. Certainly people apparently really want to play our games, they just don't wanna buy them. So we'll do what we can, but whatever that's gonna be is hard to say yet."

Crytek is really starting to make a art out of this backpeddling aren't they?!

I don't buy into his conclusion. From what I've heard Crytek games are usually used for benchmark purposes on the PC, so people aren't interested in actually playing them.

Maybe, but Crysis 2 was pretty fun. It had a entertaining campaign. Not sure about the first one.

I never tried the second one because it didn't seem at all interesting compared to the first one. Yeah, I liked the first game a lot.

Anyway, back on topic. Sure they say that now that they've got the bashing from the community... On one hand, I'm happy they've changed even this little bit but on the other hand, they should really be able to defend their statements.

You still have to run and play it to benchmark it though

Now they just need to make people actually want to play it.

I think they should have just stuck with their original opinion. It would be interesting to see how many people who pirated the game would have actually bought it.
