Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is Achievements/Trophies the greatest thing to happen to games this gen?

not for me, achievements and trophies are just an annoying messages that pop ups everytime i'm playing a game, i could'nt care less about them.

as a way to extend the length of time someone can enjoy playing a game, they're great. i can say that getting all the trophies in some games has made me lose complete interest in playing them again anytime soon though, which is kind of a bummer.

overall i'd say they're a great addition.

I liked it better when you unlocked concept art, making of videos and other bonus content instead of a little trophy/achievement message. That motivated me more in Uncharted DF then games that only have a meaningless message pop up.
It is still better then nothing at all when you start getting bored with a game. Better a meaningless goal then no goal at all if the gameplay alone can't hold your attention anymore.

I wouldn't miss it when it is gone, although it is kind of nice to have some sort of a history of the games you have played over the years.

Some of the trophies are just to retarded to get so it kind of kills the replay value of the game for me and can make me sick of it. I would say the vast improvement in the multiplayer experience has been the greatest thing, although at times it can take away from the single player aspect it provides endless hours of fun with friends especially.

Not even close, but they are pretty nifty.

Says the trophy whore -_-

OP

They're just very rewarding. I can live without them, but I'd be lying if I said they weren't probably one of the best addition to gaming this gen.

Trophies/Achievements are one of the important and interesting things in this gen. Its really cool to compete with your friends for who gets 100% first, and who got what at a certain playtrough. IMO they add value to gaming.

Nah, aside from DLC and mandatory patches, its the third worst thing, never cared about them, and find most of them to be tedious. since you don't unlock anything if you do them. (everything is DLC anyways ;-D )

Trophies used to reduce the replay value for me. I wouldn't play a game again if I already had the trophies. Now I just don't care.

If I enjoy a game I would continue to play it despite having the Platinum thophy or 100%. The Trophies/Achievements just add more value to your gaming experience and to your social interaction with other gamers. And besides the diferent names, its nice that with multi-platform games, they are exactly the same. thus you can discuss and change experiences with other gamers that play the same game has you in a different platform.

I really like Trophies because the trophy list is, apart from the challenge, a sort of gaming diary for me. I know exactly when I played which game and so it gets some sort of lasting effect.

The worst thing this generation was social media and the online gaming boom. I don't want to have a Facebook Account in order to get a Platinum Trophy. And I just don't like competitive online gaming... I like to play coop with my wife and I want my game to have a story or some sort of Narrative/character interaction...

If you ever want to know what is wrong with our society, you just have to play some competitive multiplayer games. Cheating, quitting, insults, sabotage...

I haven't a problem with them. There are some fools who don't bother with many areas of a game. I mean people like that might as well take the first two slices of bread out of the bag and throw the rest of the loaf in the garbage.

Now that's not to say achievements/trophies don't have their negatives. People who play through games that rip their nips just to get a higher gamerscore are mental.
