Phantasy Star Online 2 is free-to-play, coming to iOS and Android

by Andrew Yoon, Mar 26, 2012 1:30pm PDT

It's been over a decade since Sega released the first Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast. The MMO space has changed quite dramatically over the years, and the upcoming Phantasy Star Online 2 reflects the evolution of the genre.

Perhaps the most significant announcement from Sega today: Phantasy Star Online 2 will be free-to-play, as so many games tend to be nowadays. Like other online games, microtransactions will monetize the gameplay experience.

In addition to the already-announced PC and Vita versions, Sega has also announced a smartphone version, coming to iOS and Android. According to Andriasang, the phone versions will differ from the PC and Vita versions. Instead of being the "full" experience, it will offer simpler character creation, simpler controls, and a more "personal" experience. Instead of of-erring cross-platform play, it will simply share data with the PC/Vita versions.

The PC version will be available in Japan by early summer. The smartphone version will follow next, in Winter. Finally, the Vita version will be available next year.

Your signature scared the living crap out of me :(

The IoS/Android integration sounds awsome if by share data they mean everything you collect and the experience you earn gets transfered over to the PC version.

Seems like I have a reason to buy a Vita. :)

Dam wheres the 3ds love?

so PSO2 will be a freemium game on PC and VITA in additional to iOS and Android even though the phone version is different from the PC and VITA one?

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Might just have to pick this game up for PC when it releases, because this is actually a fairly enjoyable franchise.

Not too interested in the IOS or Android integration personally though, it might be nifty for people who already have such devices, but it's certainly not a big enough sig err thing to get me to buy a seperate device for the game.
