Alright so everyone knows I was at PAX this last week. It was a amazing and I have decided to review all three major console manufacturer's booths.
The first review to launch is Sony's.
Last year at PAX I avoided Sony's booth like the plague however at the end of PAX 2010 when I got around to their booth I found out I had missed a lot of swag and some good games. So this time around I decided to hit Sony's booth day one. The first game I wanted to check out "Twisted Metal"
Twisted Metal - The first Twisted Metal game on the mighty PS3. Once one of Sony's biggest franchises but now ignored for years. However Sony decided to bring Sweet Tooth back in full force. The demo available at PAX was a multiplayer demo showcasing several multiplayer modes. Remember in the good old days how the only objective in Twisted Metal was to blow everyone else up? Well that's changed their is a mode staying true to the classic game play. However new modes like a assassin type mode where you target a specific player or a mode where you have to destroy the other teams statue make the game play more interesting. The inclusion of the helicopter changes the game play completely as now you have death from above. I played the game and talked a bit with the development team. It was awesome
StarHawk - The spiritual successor to WarHawk however unlike WarHawk the majority of the game play in StarHawk is based on the ground. A third person shooter based in space. I was skeptical as I didn't very much like WarHawk. The first ten rounds of the day were a contest. Who ever captured the flag first in each round was entered for a later five on five match. I captured the flag in 80-seconds apparently a record, then I dropped a re spawn pod on a mech blowing it up. Now the Sony staff freaked and after the match wanted to talk for a little, I got a free shirt and told to come back for the five on five later in the day. I came back and won the five on five match, I was given a copy of God Of War 3 signed by the whole development team. It was awesome , the game was truly amazing and the staff were even more fun to interact with then the game!
Resistence 3 - Next game to be played was Resistence 3. I enjoyed this title allot less then the previous two titles. Honestly it seemed like a generic shooter, the visuals and graphics were amazing. However the game lacked anything unique or innovative. I didn't finish the demo time I had, I decided I'd rather check out Ratchet and Clank.
Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One - I really like platformers and have enjoyed some of Ratchets passed adventures. So I jumped at the chance to play four player co-op with fellow fans. The graphics were very pretty , the audio was good and the game play to boot. I played my match and was impressed. Sony did a good job with this one, though I wouldn't say its better then the past Clank games its definitely worth checking out.
Uncharted 3- So the big game of the booth. I waited two and a half hours in line to get in, longer line then BattleField3 and CounterStrike. I was shown the latest game play demo, meeting several developers. I then went out and played the playable demo. However I'm not the best third person shooter gamer so I got my but whooped. The game was visually impressive, game play fluid and pretty enjoyable. However I preferred the TwistedMetal and StarHawk demo's.
By the time I had played every game in the Sony Booth, talked to all the developers and done my competition to win GodOfWar3. The first day of PAX was almost over. I had time for one panel in between.
However I was told by a Sony staff member that David Jaffe would be in to sign autographs the next day. I loved TwistedMetal back on the PSOne and Jaffe is my favorite developer who is affiliated with Sony. I also have a friend who comes to PAX with me each year, however my friends colon blew last year and he was in the hospital for months. He's a major Jaffe fan and he missed PAX this year, I knew he would want an autograph.
So day two I went back to the Sony booth first thing in the morning to meet Jaffe.
I was first in line and I guess a Sony employee thought that it meant I was a Sony fanboy. He came up to me and was like "Who's the greatest game company in the world". However I answered my honest opinion, Nintendo. Shrieks of terror spilled out, the guy right behind me yelled "Get the fuck out of here". Boo's could be heard throughout the crowd of some 200 fans. I was on quick defense trying to re-assure everyone that I like Sony as well , but I told the guy behind me I wasn't about to lie. I was like I love all the major games companies and Sony is among my favorite's I just have a place in my heart for Nintendo. The crowd of fans went ballistic I was seriously a little concerned for my safety, then the great Sony employee came to my rescue. He was like yelling out loud "But you do own a PS3 right" I then said "Yes I own a PS3" he then said "Well then you can stay" I'm not really sure what he meant by that but the crowd died down immediately as if he was God. I then got to talk to him for a couple minutes, re-assuring him that I do like Sony games and grew up with PSOne classics like Twisted Metal.
Anyways David arrived right on time. I went over to him and he asked me who to make the autograph out to. I was like, oh its not for me. He jokingly said "Your not going to sell this on Ebay are you" I was like "No". I explained what happened to my friend and that I would love if he signed an autograph for him. Jaffe was extremely nice and tried to write a message he wrote "Will I hope you get better" and signed. But then he told me that he wanted to do something special for my friend. He pulled out a Twisted Metal T-Shirt, only fifty in existance and he said most were worn by the development team. He then autographed the shirt for my friend. I was so jealous I would have loved that limited edition shirt, however I knew my friend would love it way more.
Having bonded with Jaffe and as many of the Sony employees at the booth as I could. So helpful informative and interesting Sony's developers made the show for me. I was finally ready to check out Microsoft's booth and HaloFest. For that review tune into the Microsoft board tomorrow!
