Forums - Sales Discussion - First Party vs Third Party Software Sales Nintendo Software too Successful?

You can not blame Nintendo for being able to create so many great games over the years. They are known for quality and fun. Two things most third parties are not known for least to the extent Ninty is. What third parties should do if they want to sell as well as Ninty is try there hardest on what ever console. There are ones that have done this and these are the successful ones.

These at some point have meant good quality and fun to me

Ninty
Sega
Capcom
Squaresoft
Midway
Rare
Konami
Sony
Atlus

I am sure there are more and I am sure others have some different ones.

Wait, that's the most stupid method of comparing sucess.

3rd parties have sold more on the Wii using an aligned launch comparison than on the PS3 or 360. And that is even considering that most development effort and money has gone into the PS3 and 360. Nintendo's sucess does not stop others from succeeding, especially being as first party sucess causes hardware sales, which leads to increased 3rd party sales

Consumers are only going to spend so much money on games for any given year.  The point I was trying to make is Nintendo's own games are dominating the sales on their platforms by a huge margin.  Looking at sales, the top sellers are all nintendo which means that consumers are spending most of their money on first party instead of third party software.  No doubt there has been success for third parties on Nintendo platforms, but not by as high a margins as the other systems because of the first party dominance.

It would be interesting to see what the attach rate for first party software is vs. third party.  Considering the amount of games released on nintendo platforms, nintendo should be pretty small fraction, but I bet that at least of the total software sold on the wii and DS is first party.

There a lot of things your missing here.

The biggest is the Wii has about 300 more games then the X360 and about 500 more games then the PS3, some of them are bound to sell good.

Not to mention the Wii is double the sales of the PS3 and X360, which gives them much more software sales.

Can someone do this right and compare it more fairly?

You're missing my point, just as I suspect I am missing yours.

Because of Nintendo's excellent first party lineup, the Wii has 49.1% market share. This huge userbase means that the Wii has had incredible software sales for things like MArio and Sonic @ the olympic games, as well as equally incredible sales for niche games like Madworld and especially no more heroes (compare it to the company's previous games).

It is certainly true that Nintendo's dominance reduces the 3rd party attach rate on the Wi compared to what it could bei. But the only company that is concerned about attach rates is MS (for obvious reasons) everyone else either looks at shipped numbers, or profit/loss

How can a game company in the business of selling videogames be too successful in achieving that goal?

Something that tends to go unsaid is that Nintendo dominates not only their own platforms, but the industry at large.  Using the same standard in the OP (which also seems to count Mario & Sonic as 1st party for some reason)  and comparing the top 50 games this gen across all platforms...

30 Nintendo

20 Microsoft + Activision + Square Enix + Sony + Rockstar + Majesco + Konami + Capcom + Ubisoft

...3rd parties are looking at a similar ratio of competition no matter where they go really.

edit: And I'm now just noticing that EA doesn't even have one game in the top 50! :x
