BrainBoxLtd: Something that's actually difficult, something that makes a person think, something that the average person would find frustrating but an experienced gamer find enjoyable, etc.

Well that, like most every definition of "hardcore", seems extremely subjective since what some experienced gamers find thought provoking or difficult others might find mindless and easy.

Can you further elaborate? Are all three of these things a requirements to be "hardcore" because then there goes games like BioShock which are absurdly easy even on the hardest difficulty without vita-chambers. And something like Gears of War certainly isn't all that thought-provoking being almost entirely devoid of any kind story or thoughtful concepts. (One of the reasons I liked it actually) And games like GTA IV and CoD IV are enjoyed by the masses as well as the "core" audience.

So how do those games fit with your personal definition?
