If that's the case and they are also discontinuing the 60GB, the 'price drop' will actually be a value DECREASE if they keep the 80GB model at $599 once the 60GB's are gone. An upgrade from 60GB to 80GB is costing sony PENNIES, and is more than offset by the removal of the emotion engine (if that's true) |
Which is exactly why they are doing it. They introduce a cheaper model at the full price wiht a small upgrade in HD to entice consumers while they sell out there remaining system stock at the lower SKU price. The make the money back with the new SKU and even though they lose money on the old SKU they increase their user base through the inital spike after the price cut and the 10% increase in monthly sales afterwords. Then they can drop teh price for real to 499 later and see another spike on a cheaper to make system.
OH and they did remove the EE from the 80 GB on the Box there is a limited compatability warning.
