The new 80 GB PS3 is watered down it DOES not have an emotion engine chip and therefor limited campatability. Because of this and the fact that 60 and 80 GB HD cost the same to produce means that the New 600 dollar PS3 is cheaper to produce than the 60GB.
It makes sense for them to discontinue the 60GB model sell off its stock at a 100 dollar discount and have only the 80GB model left and than introduce another price cut to 500 later this year to bump sales again.
