Just to be clear, the hotdog/steak analogy is not what I believe about the PS3/Wii situation. It was just to illustrate that you can take an analogy and twist it any number of ways. Ultimately I recognize that the Wii is aimed at a slightly different, yet still overlapping, demographic to that of the PS3/360. My sarcasm toward PS3Owner was mostly due to his comments about how he felt Nintendo had handled their supply chain.
I am by no means an expert on the subject but I happen to have a small bit of first hand knowledge at the intricate complexities of supply chain management. It is no small task to get a new factory online, or to to boost the production capacity of a given plant. You have to deal with everything from the extra space, new employees, building and fire regulations which require you to wait sometimes weeks for inspectors to give the ok to go ahead, suppliers need to be given fair warning of increased order size, shipping logistics need to be re-evaluated at every single point of the supply chain (HUGE task), and you need to get your retailers involved in most of the latter stages when it comes to the logistics of moving this many units you need both sides on the same page. There is actually more to it then that but that is just a taste.
Macro Supply Chain Management is not quick, and it is most certainly not easy.
