The Pythons knew how to make a running gag work, because they also knew how to not run it into the ground. Most of their running gags lasted exactly one episode, and the few that had longevity never got anywhere near having recurring circumstances ("It's...", "And now for something completely different", etc.). The comedy in those long-running gags was the setup (which changed each time), not the gag itself.
Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.
