For example some extra optional explainers by way of NPC interaction early on... or a simple cutscene that explains the last two games and some important concepts. It matters when you try to expand to more owners.
Using a cutscene may not be the best choice. Players want to play a game, not watch a movie.
I think they should make the story as independent from the other two as possible and deliver short but concise info while the game progresses... In time, the prequels will become necessary.
