I really find skill trees and weapon/armor upgrades in most modern AAA games a pest. There are games that do it well, and some that need it (RPGs for instance), but for every game that implements the mechanic well there are 4 where it just makes the experience worse. DOOM 2016 is a game I love, I also found a lot of enjoyment in the modern God of War games, but why did they need to shoehorn this upgrading crap into the games, just let me slay enemies. Or if you have to, then just let me find the upgrade through exploration, instead of skill-points I need to decide what to spend on. It is also a more satisfying, that your exploration gets rewarded with a unique weapon/armor instead of some orbs, where you can decide which of your existing gear you want to upgrade.
It doesn't help that so many games also have terrible menus, that are confusing to navigate in, another thing people don't complain enough about imo. Between skill trees, gear changes and upgrades and crafting, some of those games make you spend more time in menus than actually playing the games, which is driving me nuts.
