Wii U, and for Xenoblade Chronicles X alone it was worth it. But I also hold a lot of resentment toward the console. Some of that resentment is self-inflicted, I so readily transferred my Wii library over to a console that was both less aesthetically pleasing to have on the shelf and added 2 minutes of loading to actually play my games → that’s up from about 2 seconds (which includes clicking into the game). And apart from XCX I didn’t play anything else on it for more than a hour or two that wasn’t a virtual console or Wii game aside from Wii Fit U.
I also own Dreamcast which has many more games I played a ton of. Skies of Arcadia remains one of my all-time favourites, and Soul Caliber was among my favourites from its release until at least the early Wii generation. Dreamcast was by far my most played home console of the PS2 generation. During that generation, I played more past Gen consoles: PSX probably my second or even first most played console of that generation, SNES my third… although my SNES was failing during this gen due to a decade and a half of use; by the end, the original power switch was replaced something of my own creation. My Mega Drive wasn’t doing any better, with tape making up more of the controller surface area than the original plastic before I finally replaced them. My PSX in the Dreamcast Gen was actually the third PS console I’d owned, a little small white “PS1” model.
Vita for handhelds, it began as a portable PSX until the games started coming out on Nintendo Switch, and for that I loved the damn thing. It remains in use today as my Xenogears machine.
Gamecube is really the only console I don’t think I should have bought. I have freakishly huge hands and it physically hurts me to play any kind of action game on it for more than about 10 minutes (sharp pains in the corners of my hands). But it did have Animal Crossing… which avoided that problem since I could hold the controller a bit differently and still play the game, there wasn’t much action. Other than AC, there wasn’t anything I recall playing on it more than a small amount of time… and even Animal Crossing was really just one week of intoxication with friends as we smoked up, drank whisky, and played that game probably 24/7. There were so many people playing that game that I think only my character had its original user by the end of that week (…or was it two weeks? It doesn’t matter). Maybe for that experience it was worth it, but certainly not outside of it.
