It's pretty funny how one man's intimate is another man's claustrophobic. I don't share your feeling, but I think I can understand what you mean anyway. For me, third person makes the world feel more distant to me, I guess in an immersion-reducing way. In first person, it feels more like I'm actually in the world, thereas in third person, I kind of feel like an observer, it feels more like just a game.
