For me, 1st person kicks 3rd person's ass for immersion, and I also prefer the more direct feel of controls stemming from a model that you're "inside" while controlling it. For instance; driving racing games in a 3rd person view makes no sense at all to me, doubly so in more sim-like games with proper physics models and feedback. |
I feel like it's much harder to get a good feeling of your surroundings in driving games in first person, so using a first-person view feels like disadvantaging myself for no reason. Might be the same thing with other sim-like games, but really, I have fairly little experience with either.
To clarify, I'm not complaining about the lack of a third-person view. I don't think I've ever done it, and I'm probably unlikely to do so in the future either. I think it's a valid design choice and puts everyone on the same line. I also couldn't agree more strongly about the feeling regarding controls. Third-person mode doesn't have to feel bad either, but nothing beats the snappy feeling of a well-done first-person mode.
Also, I've rarely seen people complain about the lack of a third-person mode - but I think I have seen it every now and then.
