The OG Red/Green were stored in 500KB cartridges, so it's more like 4x the storage, really. Red/Blue were 1MB because by 1998 that had become standard already, not that they were actually using it.
If you want an actual impressive compression feat, that would be RE2 on the N64. ~400-500 MB of data crammed into a 64MB cartridge.
