You are not alone, I had messed around with them on the map but it was just a couple days ago I happened to get to the right spot and it showed the prompt to hit "A" to reveal the dungeon. I hadn't paid enough attention to realize each one was working independently and kept trying to follow more than one needle at once. Then I spent time using the compasses (really didn't like the blue dot ones).

I believe myself to be near the endgame but my collection level makes me wonder if there is a whole underground section.
