PS Vita was nowhere near the powerful as the PS3 and the market forces were different. PS6 Portable is said to have 8GB more ram than the PS5, ram is the primary driver of costs here. Not cooling materials. Beyond that a $550 PS6 lite (sold at a fair loss) would offer little benefit over a base PS5 to the general user (slightly better image quality & RT) and may actually be compromised in terms of CPU, many people would simply not upgrade and be content with their base PS5 and it certainly wouldn't justify its own exclusives, so it doesn't necessarily solve the any problems here.

The only caveat here is that we don't actually know how next gen features are being used. IF Machine Learning enables things outside of visuals (i.e next gen NPC, physics simulations, operating system functions etc that aren't possible elsewhere), then a PS6 lite could replace the PS5 and have enough USP in terms of feature support to get people to pay $600 for similar level graphics but much expanded gameplay experience. Even then, I think Sony would simply push the portable/hybrid and ignore a TV only version until late in the gen (Hybrid = more play time, more variety of games played).

I can guarantee you there wont be 8GB more RAM in the handheld. If there was ever plans for it to, I'm certain they've been scrapped. The PS6 handheld will have just enough RAM to play PS5 games. Sony will instruct devs to just make a PS5 game and port it over. It doesn't matter if it doesn't offer any benefit over the PS5. Sony will discontinue the PS5 and the new Playstation models will be the only ones available. Xbox won't have a product at a mass market price so they're not a threat regardless of what they do, and the PS6 TV would still be leagues ahead of the Switch 2 technically so there really is nothing stopping them for doing this? Backlash for not being strong enough? Well, the backlash to the PS5 Pro price didn't hurt them at all, and actually only acted as a valuable free marketing campaign for Sony. People need to stop thinking they can hurt Sony with backlashes.
