I'm pretty sure that Sony has realised that skyrocketing prices has made the high end PS6 model (codename Orion), no longer viable as a mass market product. What they'll do is take the chipset they designed for the handheld, and package it into a small console shell. That package will be Sony's next main console intended to sell to the masses. The Orion model will be renamed into a professional model like PS5 Pro. I think you're prediction is right though and won't even be called a PS6 because of it. We'll just see names like Playstation Portable, Playstation budget and Playstation Pro. |
The PS6 portable and its "Vita TV" version may not be much less expensive than the home console version. Current portable PC's are very expensive, and the handheld is expected to blow them out of the water in specs.
The ROG Xbox Ally X cost $1000 and may increase to $1200-$1400 by the time the much more capable PS6 handheld is launched (it hasn't yet got a price hike, MS and Asus may cancel it soon). It goes without saying, Sony can get components at cheaper prices and sell their consoles at a small loss, not to mention that unlike ROG Ally, PS6P can make Sony money through software, subscriptions etc. But even with all that in mind, I don't expect the handheld to cost less than $900 at the absolute minimum. A Vita TV equivalent + a controller won't save more than $75~
I think the handheld has a decent chance at being the best selling SKU, because portability may be seen as a bigger selling point than whatever the PS6 home console offers, and being about $200 cheaper somewhat helps too.
