It is increasingly looking like id Tech may be done as an in-house engine. RIP.

That sucks for sure, people were hoping they'd move more internal studios to id Tech, not move id and Machine to UE after their current projects release (Quake reboot and Wolfenstein 3). There are so few non-UE games left, especially at the AAA level, and most of those are proprietary engines which have been dropping like flies so far this generation. Everything looks so samey these days being nearly all on UE.

Other than Unreal, the only real options left to studios without their own engine are CryEngine V (no updates since 2022, seems to be dying) and Unity 6 (which isn't really advanced enough compared to Unreal 5 for AAA's to use it). Everything else advanced enough to use on AAA's is proprietary.

Remaining AAA proprietary engines at this point if id Tech is dead include ForzaTech (Forza Horizon and Fable), Creation Engine (TES 6), IW Engine (Call of Duty), Decima (Horizon and Death Stranding), 4A Engine (Metro), Dunia Engine (Far Cry), Anvil engine (Assassin's Creed), Snowdrop Engine (Avatar, Star Wars, and Splinter Cell remake at Ubisoft), Frostbite (Battlefield), RE Engine (Capcom), RAGE engine (GTA 6), Katana Engine (Koei Tecmo), and a few unnamed internal proprietary engines.
