Atari shot itself in the foot with a lot of bad deals and acquisitions, too, and their failed attempts to break into the home computer market with the 8-bit line and the ST. And I loved the Atari 8-bit line.
Then there's Sega. They still make great games like Like a Dragon, the occasional Sonic, and Virtua Fighter (notwithstanding the 20-year gap between VF5 and VF Crossroads), as well as the IPs they got when they bought Atlus, but they've still fallen behind Capcom, their old rivals at Bandai Namco, and Square Enix.
