You do realize that without Yokoi, there would have never been a GameBoy, no? In the initial manufacturing of GB product, there was an error which made the screens appear much too dark to see anything. Yamauchi, already skeptical on the weak specs of the system, reportedly responded by demanding that the GameBoy be scrapped. But Yokoi fought and eventually got his way. GameBoy was his brain child, as was Game & Watch and marketing NES as a FamiCom. |
So you are holding the near nixing of the GameBoy against Yamauchi the president that brought Nintendo into the video game space in the first place? Did he not end up being swayed into the GameBoy in the end providing Nintendo with another console pillar? Being able to be swayed seems like positive in this scenario since that path lead not only to the portables but also Pocket Monsters amongst other software. He could have dug his heals in but didn't.
Nice topic by the way. On said topic, my 2 cents would be: That while I am not versed well enough in the history, that Furukawa has not screwed up yet and ridden the wave he was placed on. He hasn't wiped out yet but he looks a little shaky where Nintendo's software output is concerned. Considering how closely they have been playing their software cards to their chest I could be wrong about that. He could be saving cards back for when the console sales momentum begins to wane. It is just too early to tell with him. I think your question comes too soon to be answered well or fairly, but that is part of the fun of a hot take that should be a bold prediction.
