@OP: this is what I'd like to see:

  • Don't remake Star Fox for the third time. Let's get a new setting/premise/story that expands on the mythology
  • Embrace the rail shooter. I know it's an antiquated genre at this point, but it has huge upside
  • High replay value. That means leaderboards, medals, branching paths, hidden planets & sectors, and maybe even alternative endings. I don't mind if the game is 2.5 hours long, as long as I'm incentivized to play it again and again
  • While I want most stages to be on rails, I would like a few all-range areas in the vein of Rogue Squadron
  • Lots of vehicle types. That means Arwing, Landmaster, Blue-Marine, and Walker
  • Speaking of the Walker, I'd love for the game to introduce more opportunities for on-the-fly transformations
  • Bring back multiplayer! A four-player splitscreen competitive multiplayer mode would be most appreciated. I have very fond memories of playing Star Fox 64 with my buddies in high school and it would be amazing to bring back those feels :)
  • Please don't make it a Rogue-like. That said, I wouldn't mind if there was an ancillary "endless" mode with Rogue-like tendencies
  • Really invest in the audiovisual piece. Shooters benefit more than most genres when it comes to graphics, sound design, and music

Well, apart from whiffing on my first priority — not remaking Star Fox a third time — they did very well. Of course, they did well by remaking Star Fox for a third time, but beggars can't be choosers :P

But I'm happy with:

  • An expansion of the mythology
  • Rail shooter
  • High replay value, thanks to multiple difficulty levels, branching paths, and Challenge Mode
  • Lots of vehicle types
  • Multiplayer is back in a big way! This might be the most exciting thing for me
  • Big investment in the audiovisual piece. Based on the trailer, this is a gorgeous game with spectacular set-pieces. That one shot of Sector X is jaw-dropping. And you can almost feel the heat radiating off the screen during the footage of Solar. It reminds me of the opening of Darius II
