I never had issues with carts.  All my issues, I used to be a collector, were with disk drives (e.g. CD, DVD, BR).  I had a few issues with carts that had batteries.  Trying to take part Genesis and NES games to replace the battery wasn't fun, but most games didn't have batteries.  

I personally find emulation just better, simpler, easier, etc.

Yeah moving parts are typically the first thing that breaks, so early disc-based consoles aren't as durable as cartridge-based systems. Batteries can also be a hassle.

The SNES I got for Christmas 1994 still works; I doubt very much that any of my modern consoles will once they reach the same age. (32 years) They don't make 'em like they used to.
