It definitely is also a psychological thing. Maybe it's worth to port all small games to PS but if those just make a few million in revenue there but people always have in mind that "Xbox games release on PS", then that psychological damage in people's minds that buying an Xbox doesn't make any sense is huge even if they wouldn't even buy these games.
People in college or wherever obviously have these discussions about how you don't need an Xbox for Xbox games but you need a PS for PS games regardless of if those games will even be bought.
If you have ads showing 10 games saying "only on Xbox (and PC)" sounds better to sell your console as "buy it wherever you want". Maybe people don't buy a lot of the games from that ad but in their mind it at least gives the impression that Xbox has something unique and while there isn't a game in the ad you care about there will be more in the future you may will.
Psychology is a big part of how to sell a product. Ads aren't supposed to hit your rational thinking, they are meant to hit your irrational thinking to take your money^^
