I'm using Ecosia, though I may be switching to Qwant later down the road. Both are European engines, but with a different focus (Ecosia uses the money generated by the searches to plant trees whilst Qwant is very privacy focused).

Ecosia's search results are primarily powered by Microsoft Bing, enhanced by Ecosia's own algorithms. In some cases, or for specific features, it may also utilize results from Google...

It's just a layer on top :/

Qwant relies on Bing's search index to provide comprehensive results.

Qwant goes a bit further though but it's still not independent.

Brave and Mojeek seem to be in dependent and you can turn AI off in Brave.

That's now.

Qwant and Ecosia are actually working together to make their own to get truly independent, too - basically what Brave did 3 years ago, at which point they were also still dependent on Bing. In fact, since 2025 both use the same indexing machine, though it's still augmented by Bing, so not fully independent just yet.

Mojeek has been independent for long, but the indexing is rather weak with less than 10 billion pages indexed - half of Staan in Qwant and Ecosia while the latter is still in development and rollout.
