Overrated: Final Fantasy X

Underrated: Final Fantasy XII

Although I enjoyed FFX overall, it still felt like time where, despite its then-amazing visuals, Final Fantasy took a step backward. The world being a long hallway leading north to Zanarkand didn't quite sit right with me after the three PS1 games.

Tidus being a ghost was a bit difficult to swallow as a plot twist,

the sudden revelation in FF8 that five of the six main characters grew up together in an orphanage and all of them but Irvine forgot because of the GFs.

FFXII was more of what I had hoped for from a PS2 Final Fantasy. It was much more open, with plenty of optional side content that wasn't too difficult to do if you needed a break from the main story. The treasures and items felt a lot more meaningful. The fact that it had Yasumi Matsuno (during the first half of its development, at least) and the rest of the Tactics team at its helm was a bonus, which included the excellent soundtrack from Hitoshi Sakimoto.  FFXII did have its share of issues, many of which were addressed in The Zodiac Age re-released, but that just made a great game even better for me.

And while this is an extremely unpopular opinion, I even liked the cast of characters better. Yes, even Vaan, who I found much less grating than Tidus. The villains were also much better.

Again, I see this as a situation similar to Fallout 3/New Vegas. The first game was stunning, but the second game refined and polished it, and I would reverse the scores and hype. When both games got re-released on PS4/Switch, I spent much more time playing FFXII Zodiac Age than FFX Remastered.  FFXII ranks as my second favorite FF game, FFX is in the upper middle of the pack, roughly tied with FFVIII.
