To be fair, I kinda understand his predicament: he's trying at all costs to keep NATO alive until Trump is out of office, even if he needs to make an utter fool of himself to reach that goal.

Rutte hasn't be very positive of Trump before become the Nato chief, but now he kinda has to for NATO's future existence.
