The US had a long history in War crimes. In fact, the reason some high-ranking officials of Nazi Germany didn't get convicted in Nuremberg was because since the US were doing the same, it would have been too awkward to convict the German for a crime but not the American despite doing the same thing. The most well-known one is probably the trial of Karl Dönitz, the Head of the Kriegsmarine.
The prosecutor wanted to convict him due to issuing the Laconia order, which stated that Germans won't search for survivors and supply them lifeboats and food supplies anymore as they're supposed to be. But in doing so, the German defense exposed what lead to this, as in an American bomber bombing a rescue operation while the submarines were flying Red Cross flags (which makes them ineligible for attacks; attacking them anyway is a massive war crime. Unless an ambulance or any vehicle or person with a red cross fires at you, you are absolutely forbidden to attack them) and radioing in clear without code to the allies in the region to allow them to help them save as many humans as possible from the sinking.
American bombers ignored all those rules of engagement and bombed the rescue convoi twice, resulting in about 1500 dead. The British officer taken on board of one of the German U-boats was ranting furiously over the radio as this endangered many british sailors and was totally against all customs of sea warfare.
W, they couldn't nail Dönitz for the unrestricted submarine warfare because the US where employing it since day 1 against the Japanese, too, and the US were not rescuing survivors right from the start, resulting in the high-ranking Kriegsmarine Admirals to be convicted on the count, but simply couldn't give them any sentence as the US did the same, and started doing so before the Germans did.
