Unfortunately RE1 is the only one of the pre-RE4 games I have played. I also haven't played 5 and 6 (and don't intend to). I played all games in the series from RE7 onwards, except Requiem.
The original RE4 is still the peak to me, one of the best games ever made. But it is a great series overall. Was only disappointed by Village, which had a weak first hour, then it got really good for like half a game, then it dropped the ball completely, and became almost a Call of Duty game by the end. It is still a solid entry, but certainly the weakest I have played.

My vote would be a giant no.  I loved, absolutely loved, RE1-3 back in the day.  But they have aged like warm milk.  The controls are just so god awful.  I love CV, tried to play it the other day, and just couldn't.

RE1-3 (and CV) are poster childen for remakes, amazing games stuck with antiquated controls that make them horrendous with age.

I have to disagree with this. At least for RE1, which is the only one of the originals I've played. The controls are very different from modern games, but I think they work perfectly fine. You just have to get used to them. I even tried to play with modern controls, but had to switch back to tank controls, the game was clearly designed around that.
