The seasonal wipes are the best thing about Marathon. It’s just like ARPG’s like Diablo in which people play seasonal characters and everyone starts from zero every time(except they have an option of letting people play on eternal servers, which I have zero interest in).

Wipes are quite common in extraction shooters to begin with, but Bungie are making it more formalised. They are creating a clear and definite structure.

Every season is effectively a chance to experience the game again, but with new changes and updates each time, and everyone will be experiencing at the same time.

Diablo has a proper game with a big campaign and replayability there on top of having seasons.

That's all you have in Marathon.

Sure, it can be normal, I'm not into those games, but Diablo is way more than that.

Yeah, some people just play Diablo as a campaign game, and some people play it as a live service game focusing on the endgame stuff. Marathon is 100% focused on only one of those player bases. It sucks if you’re in the group that plays the campaigns and moves on, but the benefit is that if you are in the group that plays it as a live service then the game is 100% tailored to your experience—there’s no balancing of resources or development priority issues. Marathon is also a $40 game to reflect that, rather than $70 with $40 expansions.

It’s only trying to do one thing, but it’s trying to do that one thing in the strongest way possible. No hedging or trying to appease to a wider audience by offering little bits of something they might want.
