It depends on how you think about it.

I think a silent protagonist is actually more immersive, because you can imagine yourself saying the lines instead of some actor delivering them the way they happen to feel like. I'm talking about games like RPGs where you pick what you say out of a dialogue tree, of course. I loved that they went with silence in BG3, really helped me to feel like it's me in that adventure instead of some whoopty doo actor.

But yeah, it only really works with deeper RPGs. We need to be in the shoes of cool characters in other games and we need good actors to portray them.
