With WrestleMania 42 being this year - It hit me that it will be 20 years since WrestleMania 22 in Chicago.

And I can’t help but think about the rumored dream match for that WrestleMania we tragically never got: Shawn Michaels vs. Eddie Guerrero

The rumor was that if Eddie Guerrero had lived, it would have been him and Shawn Michaels one-on-one at WrestleMania 22.
Obviously a dream match with the potential to be an all-time classic. I’d go as far as to say that could have been the main event! My fantasy booking idea is this:

It starts at Survivor Series with the Team RAW vs Team SmackDown match where Shawn and Eddie would have been the captains of. That’s where we get our very first interaction and clash between them in the ring with fans buzzing over the fact that we’re finally seeing them face off in the ring - Eddie eliminates Shawn by Lying, Cheating, and Stealing.

Fast forward to the Royal Rumble. Eddie and Shawn are both in the Rumble. They come face to face again. Crowd buzzes again. They go at it again, then their attention gets drawn elsewhere during the Rumble. Then later, Shawn eliminates Eddie from the Rumble by pulling some Lying, Cheating, and Stealing of his own. Then Shawn goes on to WIN the Royal Rumble - His 3rd one, tying him with Stone Cold.

Then at No Way Out, two years after winning the WWE Championship from Brock Lesnar, Eddie does it again. He wins the World Heavyweight Championship from whoever is champion at this time (Orton, JBL, Batista, etc). The SmackDown after No Way Out, Eddie is celebrating just like he did two years prior. Thanking God and the fans for sticking with him all these years as he finds his way back on top. He then challenges anyone to step up and challenge him at WrestleMania. And THAT’S when Shawn comes out, congratulates Eddie on winning the title and climbing back to the top of the mountain.

And then Shawn points out that he and Eddie actually have A LOT in common. (Both are some of the greatest wrestlers in history; Both were labeled as ‘too small’ to ever be champions; Both had to overcome severe injuries (Shawn’s back/Eddie’s car crash); Both are former drug addicts and alcoholics who had to hit rock bottom and how Shawn, just like Eddie, reached a point where it was “Do or Die,” and just like Eddie, Shawn ‘did.’ Both turned to God, leaned on Him, their wives, and their families for Strength, and that ‘day by day, by the Grace of God, we BOTH earned our way back into this ring!’ (Calling back to Eddie’s promo on Brock Lesnar on the go-home SmackDown before No Way Out 2004) And that Shawn did it by winning the VERY SAME TITLE Eddie holds now (The WHC). Shawn can then say how because of those similarities and mutual struggles, he has the utmost respect for Eddie… But he can’t help but wonder “Who’s better?” And that Survivor Series and the Royal Rumble weren’t enough, and that they should do it RIGHT on the Biggest Stage of them All. And Shawn makes his decision “Eddie Guerrero, I, the Heart Break Kid, the Showstopper, Mr. WrestleMania, Shawn Michaels, CHOOSE YOU! At WrestleMania 22, The Heart Break Kid vs Latino Heat! Shawn Michaels vs. Eddie Guerrero for the World Heavyweight Championship!”

And of course, Eddie eagerly accepts! “Orale, HBK and Latino Heat?! For the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania?!? YOU’RE ON, ESE!”

I know that was A LOT I just dropped there, but that leads to my question.

Does Shawn vs Eddie for the World Heavyweight Title close the show at WrestleMania 22? I think it could.
Since the WWE Title match would most likely be John Cena vs. Triple H; Shawn vs Eddie would have EASILY been the much better match. The Chicago crowd would have been White Hot for it. And it gives Eddie the WM Main Event he earned and deserved but tragically never got the chance to receive.

The only thing I’m unsure of is: who goes over?

Would have been a hell of a match. But it wouldn't have main evented. Cena was top priority. Even if they did make it a title match, Cena was gonna close the show.

You're probably right. And Cena/Triple H would have suffered for it. Remember how that Chicago crowd was tearing Cena a new one? Imagine if he had to follow Eddie/HBK? Especially an Eddie/HBK match that lived up to expectation and was an instant classic? I could see Shawn and Eddie using that as extra motivation, coming back through the curtain and just giving Cena and Triple H a look that says "Follow THAT!"

They would have never stood a chance.

That crowd would have crapped all over that main event and poor Triple H would have been the victim of THREE all-time great matches he had no chance of following while being in the WM Main Event (Rock/Hogan, HBK/Eddie, HBK/Taker).
