Each Avatar movie has a place in my top 3 cinema experience ever. The first Avtar being the only film I ever went to see a second time on the big screen.
None of the Avtar movies are top in Character, story, music or acting. But each of them have the best visuals. When going to see a movie at the cinema, visuals is the most important factor for the experience. Movies with better stories can but lesser visuals can be experienced fully at home. The experience the Avatar movies give can only be felt on the big screen (and in 3D, but I understand why that might be a no for many).
Since the largest part of a movies earnings can be collected from the run at the cinema, Movies that work best for that format tend to gain comparably more. Even when they are lacking in other parts of the full "watching a movie"-experience.
