The fact that they're their own franchises doesn't mean that the Mario name isn't being milked for all its worth. Also, I'm not saying that SE doesn't milk FF, I just think that Mario is the more egregious offender. Furthermore, Zelda is starting to tread a slippery slope with Link's crossbow training. I hope they don't continue down that path.

How? As Garcian said, six Mario games (seven if you count Smash Bros.) vs. twelve Final Fantasy games, many of which are remakes or re-releases. Half a dozen genres versus, to be very generous, three. There is no reasonable way to look at those numbers and conclude that Nintendo's practices are more egregious. They release a smaller number of newer, more varied games. Period.

Many of SE's releases are remakes, and the line between milking and fan service is very fine, but that's not my point.  I recognize that SE milks their franchise, but as you pointed out, the Mario name is spread across 6 genres.  The original Mario was a platformer, meaning there are 5 genres he is in where he does not belong.  That my friend, is milking.
