I'd doubt those things as you're correct, they would reek of desperation. I'd say, off the top of my head, what they could do, to hide any desperation, would be put PS5 (and Portal) on deal for cheap enough that it pulls some potential SW1 buyers away. Kinda sorta like now. That or even better sales. They could also finally drop PS5 MSRP, which wouldn't help as much, but would help. They could also leak their upcoming handheld (hybrid) early to get potential SW1 buyers to hold off for whatever SNY has in store. They could launch that handheld sooner than expected and draw away some potential future SW1 sales. I'm sure there's plenty of other things they could do, and many of these would also impact SW2 sales to some degree. Likely not a major impact to SW1 or SW2 sales, but it wouldn't take much of an impact right now to keep SW1 from surpassing PS2. I don't necessarily think any of these are given, if even likely, but just making the point, that SW1 final sales aren't solely reliant on only what Nin does. |
I don't think that Sony's decisions are based solely on Nintendo. They WANT to sell PlayStations because its the want to raiser their bottom line like any other company. The sales are not about Switch at all. They discounts are about getting as many units out there so they can attach memberships to them. The current yearly membership is about $150. Deducting the units by $100 is a potential $50+ gain that turns into a $150 gain every year after.
The point is that by discounting the PS5 and espeically the Portal, you are actually making much much more in the long run and we aren't even talking about game sales. For that, Sony strategy should be to find a way to get to a permanent $100-150 price cut. Bank as many systems as possible and then open up the flood gates for GTA. One assumes that GTA will boost sales on launch but even if the boost is modest, Sony can still get as many units shipped before hand. The one thing that we know for a fact is that the game will have an enormous launch (in the top 3 and more than not the number 1 spot of all time). That is like the promised land for Sony. An avalanche of platforming revenue.
So the discounts and sales have nothing to do with Nintendo. its mostly about getting PSN and Platform rev to jump.
