I was there. PS1 was indeed mind-blowing and awesome, but it didn't pioneer 3D alone. The Saturn beat it to market and was also 3D-capable. PC had polygonal 3D before PS1 released. Heck, I played Starfox on the SNES in polygonal 3D before the PS1 released. N64 came out shortly afterwards and had more advanced 3D capabilities. PS1 absolutely deserves credit for playing an important role in the 3D revolution, but it was also just one of multiple pioneers. |
People have to remember too, the Saturn and even Playstation really didn't sell that great out of the gates in the US.
Saturn was just a flop in general, Playstation 1 only hit 1 million sold by May 1996 (launching in Sept 1995) ... that's a slower sales rate than the Wii U and the system needed a price cut to $199.99 to really start to cook a bit.
It wasn't really until 1996 when the N64 launched that the home 3D revolution picked up mainstream steam and even arguably it's not really until 1997 when the Playstation really became what it was a brand. Before then, the sales pace was fairly slow.
Case in point from September 1995 (launch) to end of 1996, the Playstation had only sold 2.96 million units in the US. The N64 from September 1996 to end of 1997 sold 5.4 million in essentially the same amount of time in the US, so significantly better.
Playstation didn't really start to dominate in the US until the second half of 97 and into 98 in the US, especially when people realized the N64 was going to have massive software droughts (thanks cartridges).
