Nintendo is a Japanese company. Loosing face is a nono. It was already hard to publicly apologize that the game development was rebooted.
After having MP4 on their upcoming games list on their quarterly reports for years, there was no way they would not release it. And with the promise for Switch1, time was running out. They just needed to release it in the best state they could.
