This is especially crazy because Switch 2 is a new and fast-selling platform.
In 1995, PlayStation was the new kid just released outside of Japan. There wasn't much hype for it, not relative to the fact that it would sell over 100 million units globally. SNES and Genesis/Mega Drive were old, and Game Boy hadn't gotten its second wind yet with Pokémon.
2005 surprises me. DS was picking up steam, PS2 was still selling. Xbox 360 just launched, and you have a new platform like PSP which launched earlier in the year.
In addition to circumstances in the USA, maybe Switch 2's record-setting launch occurring in June and not a holiday launch affects this.

To be clear in 2005 they sold nearly twice as much hardware as 2025 that was just a dollar number. Maybe you already know but others might not.
