Nintendo's main problem is that they seemingly don't have any of the good distribution partners Sony has all over the world, which means that outside Japan and the west, Nintendo is basically dead with no possibility of growth due to the sky high prices of Nintendo consoles outside Japan and the west. PS is everywhere on the other hand due to Sony's much better distribution on lower cost.
It all comes down to Nintendo all in all being a fairly small video game company with 9k employees, they can't really ever compete with Sony on a global arena when it comes to gaming. Nintendo can only focus on a few big markets.
No Nintendo console has ever sold decent numbers outside Japan, the US and Europe, while Sony already during PS2 era sold tens of millions of consoles outside those 3 markets.
