A PS5 release of Destiny Rising cuts directly into their Destiny 2 user base, just like NCSoft's Horizon will cut directly into their own Horizon MP user base. That's a self-inflicted wound if the game Sony themselves developed/ published got cannibalised by what they licensed out (since they won't be the ones financially incentivised). Their internal games need to survive and do well. Granted the only real benefit here is that NCSoft's Horizon might not release until 2027, so a PS5 port may not happen till end 2027 or 2028. GG's Horizon MP game should be out before that happens. |
Sony still benefits if the mobile version of Destiny or Horizon blow up on console.
There is a lot of money to be made from MTX for these F2P titles. And while cannibalizing can happen, in the case of Destiny 2, I think having Destiny: Rising on console would be beneficial for the IP, as a lot of Destiny fans want to play something new in the franchise. In the case of Steel Frontiers, it doesn't have a solid release date yet, and a late console port wouldn't really impact Guerrilla's multiplayer project.
And to be honest, if Guerrilla's multiplayer project can be overshadowed by a F2P mobile game in the same universe, it never really had a chance to be successful.
