I'd say the worst gimmicks were the actual architecture of some of the console, like the PS3 for example. Good potential power in theory, but the design was so different that most devs didn't know how to utilize the chips effectively. The console became a hassle to develop for.
After that, Sony went x86 and I think that was crucial.
I've never cared for the controller gimmicks either. The light bar is just a waste of battery life. Funny enough, for me, all the "immersive" controller features actually just remind me that I'm playing a video game, so I usually turn off all the feedback stuff in games. But if there are people who enjoy them, good for them.
