Just to expand upon my earlier point (which no one seemed to disagree with) ...

There are two things to consider when discussion whether the Wii is a fad or not, what is the definition of a 'Fad' and what is implied by saying "The Wii is a fad!"

As I said earlier, if you use the definition that a fad is a "Short live period of extreme popularity that is poorly explained with rational analysis" then the Wii and ever other dominant console can be considered a fad. No console remains widely popular for much more than (about) 5 years, and most consoles faced competition which was measureably better in many ways which was not nearly as popular.

Now, what are you implying when you say "The Wii is a fad!"? ... If the implication is that everyone will suddenly wake up and come to their senses, and there will be no long term fall out from the Wii's success you'd be wrong. Every 'Fad' that has ever existed has left a long standing impact in the market where it originated ... Disco is not really dead, and many of the most popular tracks and albums of the past 3 decades have their roots in Disco (whether musically, or in spirit); fitness fads (like Tae Bow) end up being incorporated into (pretty much) every future fitness program; and in videogames the elements that made one game or platform super successful are incorporated into (pretty much) every genre and future platform.
