Edit: Nevermind. I see the rules are more clearly defined these days. |
The rules used to be coded into the site itself and a lot more broad and I think we had more of them, for years we couldn't even edit it so we instead made it into a thread and diverted the hyperlink of the ruleset to that thread, Lol. It was because we were going to be more agile in adjusting the ruleset too, even in that ruleset there's a few that we tend to completely ignore anyway.
○ Need to accurately describe the subject content and should not use deceptive hooks to lure people in
Like this...
○ Copy/Pasting full transcriptions of articles is strictly prohibited!
And this...
○ Your thread should never only be a link to the story/article/video/etc. You must include your own commentary
And this...But honestly I disagree with the latter part of this, I try to avoid including my thoughts directly in the OP when creating a thread because I feel like it could steer discussion in a certain direction (like, my direction, which I don't think would be right to encourage) and I want people to read the story and form their own opinion.
○ Do not say that item A/B/C sucks! Give reasons why a product is either bad or great
Probably relaxed on this, haha.
○ Some profanity is understandable, but try not to overdo it. VGC is a place for people of all ages, so be mindful
Probably relaxed on this (I've got to stop swearing so much).
○ Necro-bumping threads beyond 30 days without good cause
We've been lighter on this lately, Lol.
○ Posting more than three consecutive times in a thread. Use the multi-quote function if that helps
We basically ignore this now, but previous Mods used this rule to ban the shit out of users which wasn't fun.
○ Backseat Moderating - You are not a moderator! Use the Report button or contact a moderator via PM if you see anything that needs attention
I mean, Lol. There's quite a bit of this lately.

1/2 could just be merged into one, don't post an objectively false claim, don't post unsubstantiated claims both cover a lot of the same areas, essentially check your sources before making a claim, and actually this is something that a lot of people are doing in highly sensitive political threads lately and is something we should be cracking down on but aren't. So it extends beyond gaming.
We have a rule for #2 (Rumours) when it comes to Threads but it's a bit more complicated with Posts.
○ RUMORS: Only create threads based on credible rumors. Do not come up with rumors of your own
I don't agree that all rumours should be banned, there is a massive difference because NateDrake/Jason Schreier and "Some Random Rage-Baiting Idiot YouTuber" and when it comes to the latter, we do tend to lock those threads because the sources are awful, but we don't tend to action on specific, individual posts about them in a thread, so lets use an example.
- "Random YouTuber Says Concord Cost $2bn!" - If that's a thread, it would be locked, unless it's actually a credible leaker.
- "Random YouTuber Says Concord Cost $2bn!" - If that's a post, I don't think we tend to moderate it but maybe we should.
There has definitely been a bit of a "I'll just post whatever I want" lately across all aspects of the website, no matter the source, or not even providing any sources at all, and I think we're personally doing a disservice to the quality of threads by allowing that to happen. In Gaming I've had to call out so many "I heard..." "This YouTube said..." lately, for things which were obviously horseshit, Lol.
This reminds me that GamingLeaksAndRumours has a leaker credibility tier, Lol.
