My personal rating: B+.

There were lots of games I’ve really been craving (e.g. Mario Tennis(!!), 2D Yoshi), there were some very surprising moments (e.g. Skylanders Swap Force meets Kirby Air Riders, the return of heavy Amiibo support, Virtual Boy & the Virtual Boy accessory), there was a lot of cool third-party (e.g. FFVII Remake release date, DQVII Remake, Hades II), and I now have an excuse to revisit Mario Wonder (which I’m hoping to see running at a crisp 120fps or 4k).

My main complaints would be that it was terribly weird in its execution: Mario 40th at the start? And Yoshi is the big Mario game??! What’s with the fixation on accessories (e.g. Amiibo, Rosalina’s Storybook, Talking Flower toy, etc.)? Why close with Fire Emblem? And $70 for the Mario Galaxy bundle??? What??!? Oh yeah…and, um, not super consumer friendly pricing. It was such a weird Direct filled with lots of very good content. It just didn’t stick the landing all too well.
