I've always assumed it's because the US restricts their business less than many otherwise comparable countries would. Also, there's probably many other factors deeply rooted in history too (e.g. cultural things that support entrepreneurship, especially in tech). It seems like it's great for growth and business, but it also seems to create inequality and hence unhappiness among the portion of the population that isn't doing that well, so there's a price to pay for that success. I haven't looked into this in greater detail though, because it's probably a pretty nontrivial whole, but this is my current assessment of things. Anyway, I'm not surprised companies want to be based in the US, and besides, relocating probably isn't too easy either (especially with the current US admin).
